Upgrading unique weapons in Elden Ring requires Somber Smithing Stones, which can be difficult to farm in large quantities during a standard playthrough. By finding Somberstone Miner's Bell Bearings scattered across the Lands Between, players can offer these items to the Twin Maiden Husks at Roundtable Hold to purchase infinite upgrade materials. Securing all five bearings ensures your special armaments reach maximum power with minimal effort.
Early Game Somberstone Miner's Bell Bearings
The first bearing allows players to purchase Somber Smithing Stones 1 and 2 directly from Roundtable Hold. It is obtained by defeating the Fallingstar Beast inside the Sellia Crystal Tunnel in Caelid. Players can reach this dangerous tunnel early by interacting with a trapped chest located in the Dragon-Burnt Ruins.
The second bearing unlocks unlimited purchases of Somber Smithing Stones 3 and 4. You can acquire this item by traversing the Altus Tunnel in the Altus Plateau and defeating the Crystalian duo boss encounter. Clearing this tunnel ensures you can quickly bring mid-game special weapons up to speed.
Mid to Late Game Upgrades in Mountaintops of the Giants
To acquire Somber Smithing Stones 5 and 6, players must progress through the story until reaching the frozen northern lands. The third bearing is sitting outside the entrance of the First Church of Marika in the Mountaintops of the Giants. Looting the corpse lying in the snow immediately grants access to these crucial late-tier materials.
Having access to endless tier 5 and 6 stones allows players to experiment with various unique weapon builds before tackling end-game areas. Offering the bearing to the Twin Maiden Husks consolidates your resource management into a single hub. This significantly reduces the need to hunt down individual pickup nodes across the map.
Endgame Locations in Crumbling Farum Azula
The final two bearings are located within the crumbling ruins of Farum Azula. The fourth bearing unlocks Somber Smithing Stones 7 and 8 and is found on a corpse hanging over a ledge near the Tempest-Facing Balcony Site of Grace. Grabbing this item lets you upgrade weapons near their maximum potential before final boss encounters.
The fifth and final bearing grants unlimited access to Somber Smithing Stone 9. It rests on a corpse in front of an altar past the temple bridge in Farum Azula. Collecting all five key items prepares your character for any challenge across the Lands Between.
