Customizing or maintaining your PlayStation 5 console often begins with removing its outer side panels. Whether you are installing a new M.2 SSD, cleaning out accumulated dust, or swapping stock white covers for a fresh color, mastering this simple procedure is essential. Understanding the correct leverage points ensures you can safely detach the covers without risking damage to the plastic latches.
Preparing Your Console and Workspace
Before attempting to remove the outer panels, turn off your PlayStation 5 completely and unplug all connected cables. Allow the hardware a few minutes to cool down if you have recently finished an intense gaming session. Place the console flat on a soft, clean surface to protect the housing from accidental scratches.
Disconnecting power cords and peripheral accessories prevents unexpected electrical issues while handling internal components. Working on a stable, well-lit table gives you full visibility over the alignment hooks located beneath the shell. Taking these basic preparatory steps guarantees a smoother process from start to finish.
Removing the Upper Top Cover
Position the console horizontally with the official PlayStation logo facing upward and the rear port panel pointing toward you. Firmly grip the top corner nearest the logo with one hand while holding the base of the console steady with the other. Gently pull the corner up and slightly away from the chassis to release the primary securing pin.
Once the corner unlatches, slide the entire panel toward the bottom base of the console to free the remaining hooks. The plate should slide off smoothly without requiring excessive force or sharp sudden movements. Store the removed panel in a safe spot to prevent dust accumulation on the inner surface.
Removing the Lower Bottom Cover
Flip the console over so that the side containing the disc drive or lower smooth surface is facing directly up. Position the rear power ports toward yourself once again for consistent leverage and control. Grasp the top back corner of this panel firmly, lifting it upward slightly to disengage the main locking tab.
Slide the panel toward the bottom edge of the device until it completely disconnects from the main frame. Exercising patience during this step prevents unnecessary stress on the internal plastic hooks. With both faceplates off, you now have clear access to the expansion slot and cooling vents.
Reattaching the Faceplates Securely
Reinstalling the panels requires aligning the interior hooks with the corresponding slots on the main body frame. Position the panel slightly offset from its final resting place, then slide it firmly toward the top of the console. You will hear a distinct clicking sound as the locking clips snap securely back into position.
Inspect the edges to confirm that the plates sit completely flush against the console housing on all sides. Once both sides are locked in place, reconnect your power cables and stand mount to resume normal operation. Periodic maintenance and plate removal keep your gaming setup running efficiently for years to come.
